Chapter 13

Megan handed the angel costumes to the blue-eyed chandler and showed him how to attach the wings. The man was effusive in his praise, and she blushed and sneaked an embarrassed glance at Mona. “Tis true, I never thought you would be able to do it,” the man said. “I was certain we would end up wrapped in linen sheets rather than proper costumes. But these are splendid indeed!”

“Take care with the wings,” Megan said, “for the gauze is easily torn.”

“Aye, Mistress, we will,” he replied, turning towards the door.

“Now as to payment…” said Megan.

“Payment,” he said, his voice flat. “Mistress, you did not mention a fee when we came here.” He exchanged a glance with his brown-eyed companion. “You cannot demand a fee now.”

“But of course there is a fee,” Megan said. “I do not sew for naught!” She reached for the angel wings, but he raised them beyond her grasp as the brown-eyed man opened the door.

“Surely you did not expect the girl to do such work without payment?” asked Mona, stepping from the shadows in the back of the room. “Does your Guildmaster know you planned to cheat her?”

Both men jumped in surprise at her sudden appearance. “Nay, Mistress, we are no cheats,” blue-eyes said. “But tis true she said nowt of a fee.”

“We thought she would be happy for the experience,” added the brown-eyed man.

“The fee is one silver piece per angel,” said Mona. “You shall have the costumes when you bring the coin.” She stepped close enough to the blue-eyed man to bump her swollen abdomen against his belly and plucked the wings from his startled hand. “And not a moment before, else we will bring the matter to your Guildmaster.”

As the chandler stepped away from Mona, Megan pulled the angels’ gowns from his arms, her hands shaking with anger. “We will wait one hour for my payment,” she said. “But I have other costumes to deliver. If you have not returned, I shall be gone making my deliveries, and you may play the angels in your linen sheets.”

“But you said nothing about a fee, and tis our cloth….”

“Aye, Mistress,” the brown-eyed man interrupted. “We will try to return in time. But we will need to find the Guildmaster for the coin.” He pulled his companion by the arm and they left the house. Megan could hear them arguing out in the street over whether she was owed the payment or not.

She turned to Mona in fury. “They meant to take the costumes with no payment at all!” she cried. “If you had not been here, I don’t know if I could have stopped them.”

Mona gave her a wry smile. “Tis your first lesson in sewing for coin,” she said. “You must always decide on a fee before doing the work. Tis best if you can get half the coin before you start.”

Megan’s shoulders slumped. “He thought he could cheat me because I am but a girl, though I shall be old enough to marry soon.
